Rolling Hills Farm and Equine, LLC
Hi, I’m Jim Dennis.
My wife, Lynn, and I have been at Rolling Hills since late 2014. I had mandatory retirement because of age in January 2014 and needed something to fill my spare time. As it turned out, horses have more than filled that void.
Lynn and I had taken a dream retirement vacation that summer out West and decided to take a trail ride while there. We fell in love with riding but I had not ridden much since a teenager and Lynn less than that. When we returned home we began planning our next vacation out West, which included many trail rides. We decided to take lessons in order to become real riders and not just tourists.
We Googled riding instructors in the Cape Girardeau area, and found an amazing instructor, cowgirl and friend, Kristin Carlton at Rolling Hills. She had purchased Rolling Hills Farm not long before that from her mother and was developing her horse boarding ranch.
We took lessons from Kristin for a couple of years and during that time Kristin came across several horses that were available to purchase. In 2015, I purchased a 15 year old grade quarter horse buckskin gelding. Buck was a big 15.1 hands and beautiful. I had grown up watching Gunsmoke and my hero, Matt Dillon, rode a buckskin so the first time a laid eyes on Buck I knew he was the horse for me. Lynn also purchased a horse at the same time. We have boarded our two horses at Rolling Hills ever since and would not consider another place for them.
Kristin and Clint are the best caretakers and I think of them as family. Buck and I took additional lessons from Kristin and have become inseparable. We love to trail ride, sort cattle at Rolling Hills, and I have shot off of him when Matthew Jobe put on shooting clinics at Rolling Hills. Buck is a great horse and as he has aged (now 21 years old); he has settled down and will do anything asked of him, although he may still freak out sometimes when he sees a plastic bag (haha).
We have became friends with many of the other boarders at Rolling Hills and always look forward to the boarders only trail rides Kristin has once a month. Many of Kristin’s lesson riders know and have ridden Buck as he is used as one of her lesson horses.
I don’t know how long my body will allow me to continue riding, old age and my previous job played havoc on it (always tell everyone that in the last 10 years I had surgery that put 2 screws in my neck that are holding my head on, 6 screws in my lower back holding my butt on and last year a hip replacement). But as long as I can mount Buck, we both along with Lynn and her horse, Max, will continue to ride into the sunset at Rolling Hills Farm.
Rolling Hills Farm & Equine, LLC is owned and operated by Clint and Kristin Carlton.
Rolling Hills Farm has been in the family for over 100 years. Constructed by Kristin's great grand parents, Kristin and her children are the 4th and 5th generations to live on the farm.
